Sauna Benefits

Finland has been voted the happiest country for the last several years!

It has approximately 2–3 million saunas for a population of about 5.5 million people. This means there is roughly one sauna for every two people in the country.

Saunas are an integral part of Finnish culture, with nearly every home, office building, and even some government institutions having one. Saunas are used for relaxation, socialising, and even business meetings!

Finnish saunas have a long tradition of promoting health and well-being.

key benefits of using a Finnish sauna

  • Relaxation and Stress Relief

The heat in a sauna helps to relax muscles and soothe aches and pains in muscles and joints. It also promotes the release of endorphins, which are the body's natural feel-good chemicals, reducing stress and promoting mental relaxation.

  • Improved Circulation

The heat in the sauna causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing circulation and improving blood flow. This can aid in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues while also helping to remove waste products from the body.

  • Detoxification

Sweating is one of the body’s natural ways of eliminating toxins. The high temperatures in the sauna induce sweating, which helps flush out toxins, heavy metals, and other impurities from the body through the skin.

  • Skin Health

The sweating process helps open pores, cleanse the skin, and improve its appearance by removing dirt and dead skin cells. It can also promote a healthy, glowing complexion.

  • Muscle Recovery

Finnish saunas are widely used by athletes to aid in muscle recovery after intense exercise. The heat helps relax muscles and reduce soreness by improving circulation and reducing inflammation.

  • Improved Respiratory Function

The hot air of a sauna can help clear nasal passages and improve breathing although it's always good to consult with a healthcare provider.

  • Better Sleep

Sauna use can promote better sleep by relaxing the body and mind. After a sauna session, many people feel a deep sense of relaxation, which can improve the quality of sleep and help with insomnia.

  • Cardiovascular Health

Regular sauna use has been associated with improved cardiovascular health. The heat causes your heart rate to increase, which can act as a form of cardiovascular exercise. Some studies suggest it may help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease.

  • Boosts Immune System

The heat in a sauna can increase the body's core temperature, which might stimulate the production of white blood cells, improving immune function. Regular sauna use has been linked with a reduced risk of developing certain illnesses and infections.

  • Social and Mental Well-being

The sauna is often a social experience in Finland, where people use it as a way to bond and connect. This social aspect can contribute to mental well-being, providing relaxation and an opportunity for shared experiences.

Tips for safe sauna use

Stay hydrated before, during, and after the sauna.

Limit your time to about 10-15 minutes per session.

Avoid using the sauna if you have certain health conditions, such as skin disorders, cardiovascular issues, or respiratory problems, without consulting a doctor first.

You must not use the sauna or cold plunge if you suffer from high or low blood pressure or any heart or circular disorder, suffer from epilepsy or diabetes, are pregnant or are prone to dizziness or fainting.
